It happens to the
best of us. What can you do ahead of time to minimize the damage when
you lose your wallet, and what should you do afterwards?
Suggestions for
Security:
-
Photocopy
the contents of your walle - both sides of all cards.
-
Keep all
the account numbers and phone numbers to call and cancel with
the photocopies.
-
File the
list in a safe place.
What To Do if Your Wallet is Stolen:
-
Cancel all
credit cards immediately.
-
File a police
report immediately in the jurisdiction where it was stolen. This
proves to credit providers you were diligent and is a first step toward
an investigation if there is one.
-
Call the
three US national credit reporting organizations immediately to
place a fraud alert on your name and SS #. The alert means any company
that checks your credit knows your information was stolen and they
have to contact you by phone to authorize new credit.
